I toured around Italy on holiday in Oct 17, during which I visited Rome and was in awe at the magnificent coliseum and I've wanted to include it in a painting ever since, without finding a suitable subject.

It wasn't until I ventured past a 1950s style ice cream parlour on another holiday 6 months later in North Yorkshire that I had the idea. Outside it was an immaculate and beautifully restored Lambretta scooter and my mind was immediately taken back to a poster I'd seen of Roman Holiday featuring 'Audrey Hepburn' and her co-star 'Gregory Peck' on a scooter in Rome. I realised that re-creating that scene was the idea I needed to feature the coliseum, and when the film featured Gregory 'Peck' then there was really no other choice of animal to include but Penguins, on their own 'Roman Holiday'
