Jenny Mackenzie is a contemporary portrait painter and sculptor based in the beautiful Scottish Borders, best known for creating her wonderfully distinctive and characterful sculptures, The Bigheads.

With their elongated faces, expressive simplicity and unmistakable personalities, The Bigheads are a delightful celebration of individuality, human character and the little things that make us all unique.

The inspiration behind these quirky creations came from a rather unexpected place – a hospital corridor!

During time spent being wheeled through hospital corridors, Jenny found herself observing the colourful collection of people she encountered along the way. Doctors, policemen, elegantly dressed ladies and businessmen all caught her attention. Despite their different appearances and backgrounds, they seemed to share the same serious expressions and slow, tired blinks.

Jenny began imagining how she might capture these fascinating characters in a painting or sculpture, creating something that would unite them through a shared appearance while allowing each to retain its own unique identity.

Then came the moment that sparked it all.

While waiting for a scan, an elderly gentleman looked at Jenny and asked, "Why the long face?"

And just like that, the idea for The Bigheads was born!

Today, Jenny's wonderfully imaginative sculptures combine understated expressions with playful details, individual personalities and often a little unexpected humour. Each character has its own story to tell, inviting you to look a little closer, discover its personality and perhaps even recognise a little of yourself.
