Derrick Fielding, born in Liverpool in 1965, has nurtured a passion for art since childhood, where he often found himself captivated by comic books like 'The Beano' and 'Whizzer and Chips'.

These early influences ignited a vivid imagination that Derrick would express through drawing and creating board games for his neighbourhood friends.

His father, a painter and decorator, provided Derrick with his first “canvases” in the form of the back of wallpaper rolls, giving him an endless supply of material to practice his creativity.

Derrick's artistic journey took a more formal direction when he became a signwriter, painting large advertising hoardings at sports venues across the UK. This experience not only honed his skills but also left a lasting mark on his style, which would later influence his work as a professional artist. His early experiences in the field of signwriting, combined with his childhood love for drawing, shaped his distinctive artistic voice.

Living near the countryside, Derrick developed a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded his city. This fascination grew during his marathon cycling holidays, where he often explored landscapes and scenery on his bike—experiences that allowed him to see the world from a perspective one could only get when traveling at that slower speed.

The detailed views and unnoticed elements became a source of inspiration for his work, further reinforcing his desire to depict the interplay between light, shadow, and exaggerated compositions in his paintings.

By 2007, Derrick transitioned into painting professionally, inspired by both the beauty of everyday life and the dramatic landscapes of his hometown. His naïve style, often defined by bold use of light and shadow, captures the essence of the scenes he observes, creating a unique artistic narrative that resonates with his audience.

His work, deeply rooted in his experiences and environment, continues to captivate viewers with its distinct blend of reality and imagination.
