Angus Gardner Artist At The Acorn Gallery, Pocklington with Obi his German Shepherd

If you haven’t yet discovered the artwork of Angus Gardner, you’re in for a treat. Angus is a contemporary British wildlife artist whose paintings are as full of character as the creatures he brings to life on canvas. Based on a working farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, Angus is surrounded by the very inspiration that fuels his creativity – from the local birdlife to the rolling countryside he explores daily with his loyal German Shepherd, Obi.

With roots as colourful as his paintings, Angus was born in Newcastle to a Scottish-Irish father and a Sicilian-Maltese mother. It’s fair to say he inherited the best of both worlds – his dad’s dry humour and his mum’s Mediterranean passion – both of which shine through in his art.

Angus’s creative journey began in graphic and audio visual design, and it took him all the way to New York City, where he worked as an art teacher before moving into graphic design on the iconic Madison Avenue. But the pull of home eventually brought him back to the UK, where he spent three decades as a graphic artist for major names like Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Fortnum & Mason and The Secret Garden Distillery.

It was back in the North East, walking the farm tracks with Obi, that Angus rediscovered his love of painting. Inspired by the wildlife he saw every day, he began capturing their personalities with a mix of imagination, warmth and humour. Whether it’s a knowing glance, a quirky posture or a playful twist on a familiar scene, Angus has a unique way of helping us see animals not just as wildlife, but as characters in their own right.

His wife Pea affectionately calls him the “Bird Nerd” or “Nature Boy”, and with good reason – Angus is never short of a story about his latest wildlife encounter or the spark of inspiration behind a new piece.

Working mainly in acrylic, Angus uses his art to blend realism with storytelling, often weaving in personal memories, light-hearted commentary or a touch of whimsy. The result? Paintings that make you smile, connect with nature, and maybe even see it from a new perspective.

At the start of 2023, Angus made a bold New Year’s resolution – to create and share his own art with the world. The Acorn Gallery, Pocklington launched him as an independent artist and a few weeks later a major UK publisher saw his potential and signed him up!

We are proud to be Angus Gardner’s 'Home' gallery and hold a large stock of original paintings and limited edition prints to view.
