Mackenzie Thorpe was born in Middlesbrough, part of a large working class family and as such he followed expectation, taking on a role in the ship-building industry before being persuaded to follow his love of drawing.

He studied at Cleveland College of Art & Design before going on to graduate from Byram Shaw College of Art in London in 1982. By 1989 the city had taken its toll and he sought a better quality of life for his family, moving to Richmond in North Yorkshire. After a time spent living and working overseas Mackenzie is now back in the UK, living and working in Brighton.

Mackenzie's work has several themes all of which are closely linked with emotions and symbolism, even the over-sized shoes on his duffle-coated boys are reference to his desire to 'never grow bigger than his boots'.

'Art from the Heart' is how he works and is ultimately how his work finds a connection with the viewer...
