Stephen Simpson

There is something wonderfully uplifting about the paintings of Stephen Simpson. Bursting with colour, rich in texture and full of life, his distinctive floral compositions celebrate the beauty of nature in a way that feels both familiar and refreshingly contemporary.

Flowers have inspired artists for thousands of years, from the lotus flowers depicted in ancient Egyptian art to Vincent van Gogh's famous sunflowers. Stephen brings his own interpretation to this timeless subject, describing his work as a "contemporary take on a classical subject."

Born in Stockton-on-Tees and working in Middlesbrough, Stephen draws inspiration from the natural world, experimenting with colour, composition and texture to create paintings that are instantly recognisable. From intimate floral studies to dramatic panoramic canvases, his work captures the energy and beauty of flowers in bloom.

Roses, poppies, daisies, hibiscus and sunflowers all find their way into Stephen's paintings. Sometimes they appear in bold, exuberant arrangements filled with vibrant primary colours; at other times, softer pastel shades create a gentler, more romantic atmosphere. Whatever the composition, there is always something to discover, whether it's the delicate detail of a petal or the extraordinary depth of the painted surface.

Texture plays an important part in Stephen's work. Through his expressive use of paint, layered surfaces and glossy finishes, he gives his flowers an almost sculptural quality. Light catches the surface differently throughout the day, adding another dimension to paintings that already seem full of movement and life.

His artistic influences include Édouard Manet, Georgia O'Keeffe and J.M.W. Turner, whose extraordinary ability to capture light continues to fascinate him. Beyond the world of art, Stephen finds inspiration in the landscapes and coastlines of northeast England, where everything from a stormy sea to the glowing embers of a fire can spark an idea for a new painting.

Yet perhaps the most appealing quality of Stephen's work is its sense of optimism. His paintings are created to bring pleasure, to lift the spirits and to evoke the same emotional response as receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

As Stephen himself explains:

"I want people to smile when they see the work. I want them to be happy. I want to evoke an emotional response, like when you receive flowers in real life. Everyone can relate to floral paintings on some level."

It is this wonderful combination of colour, texture and emotion that makes his paintings so appealing. Whether chosen as a statement piece for the home, a wedding or anniversary gift, or simply because a particular painting makes someone smile, Stephen's work offers something to enjoy long after the flowers in a vase would have faded.

At The Acorn Gallery, Pocklington, we are delighted to showcase Stephen Simpson's contemporary floral paintings. Full of personality and beautifully expressive, they bring a little of nature's colour and happiness indoors.
