The London Marathon is StuART Storey’s wonderfully energetic celebration of one of the world’s most famous races — a colourful journey through the capital that brings together the unmistakable sights, sounds and landmarks encountered along the 26.2-mile route.

Rather than depicting London as a conventional cityscape, Storey twists and turns the course through a wonderfully chaotic vision of the capital. Roads snake between buildings, the River Thames winds through the composition and familiar landmarks rise dramatically from the city, all surrounded by the artist’s distinctive patterns, dots, bold outlines and vibrant colour.

And for anyone who knows the London Marathon, the landmarks tell the story of the race itself.

The runners begin in Greenwich, before reaching the magnificent Cutty Sark at around Mile 6 — one of the first great landmarks on the course and a famously noisy spot for spectator support.

From there the route heads towards the Thames and Tower Bridge at around Mile 12½, an unforgettable moment as runners cross the bridge shortly before reaching the halfway point.

The race then travels east through the towering architecture of Canary Wharf and the Docklands, roughly Miles 18–20, before turning back towards central London. With tired legs and the finish getting tantalisingly closer, runners pass the Tower of London at around Mile 23, before following the Thames along the Victoria Embankment.

The final stretch brings some of London's most recognisable sights in quick succession: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament at around Mile 25, then past St James's Park and Buckingham Palace, before that famous final turn onto The Mall and the finish line at 26.2 miles.
