MARK SAYS:
In 2019, I created ‘Thou Shalt Not Fall’ and that has continued to be well received, with many a request for a follow up piece and especially to step inside the Vampires Lair! It’s interesting how the ‘The Lost Boys’ movie has such a mix of reactions from people never having seen it to others who absolutely view it as a cult film and obsess over it. I remember watching it originally and parts of it being incredibly scary, the whole concept of being bitten and becoming a vampire has always creeped me out.
I created ‘Never Grow Old, Never Die’ immediately after finishing ‘Lost in Hollywood X’ which is a piece dominated by movie characters and I wanted to go the other way with the Lost Boys scene, after all it’s often what you can’t see that is the scariest, what lurks in the shadows or just out of sight, watching, creeping. It is an approach that has always driven my ‘Storyteller’ portfolio where scenes rely on you seeking out and deciphering the detail and clues to help to understand the story that has been written. I do love that. Personally, I feel this latest piece is more intense because of not being blatant.
I didn’t want to create a scene that was cold, muted and dark. I preferred warmth and ultimately trickery, disguising reality and luring you into a false sense of security and safety. I feel that the colour palette works so well and love the little bursts of vibrant greens and pinks that contrast against the moonlit sky and the fallen chandelier. The combination of an eerie static and movement of the flames is another quality that I love. Another thing that I really enjoyed whilst creating this image was the soundtrack, there are so many great songs, which is your favourite?
I won’t list out all the references that I have included as I prefer you to seek them out, if you are a big fan of the movie then I hope I have done justice to such an intense movie! There is still so many possibilities for follow on pieces with this film, those ideas will never grow old or die.
