Adrian Teal brings his unmistakable caricature style to two giants of Irish cinema in this wonderfully characterful original featuring Liam Neeson and Colm Meaney.
The scene is inspired by the 2023 film In the Land of Saints and Sinners, in which Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, a retired assassin attempting to leave his violent past behind, while Meaney plays Robert McQue, the man for whom he has worked. Set in 1970s Donegal during the Troubles, the film pairs the two actors in a dark Irish crime thriller.
Teal exaggerates those instantly recognisable faces to brilliant effect. With hats pulled low, serious expressions and an air of two men who have seen it all before, there’s a lovely contrast between the rather menacing subject matter and the artist’s playful treatment of the characters.
The strong blues and warm highlights give the painting a cinematic quality, while Teal’s distinctive humour turns the scene into something with enormous personality.
