I have some early recollections of travelling by steam train, I was 11 when the last steam engines were withdrawn in 1968. My abiding childhood memory of them is the sheer assault on the senses as these behemoths pulled into the station - the loud clanking and hissing noises, the sulphurous smell, and above all the sensation of being completely enveloped in dense smoke, being able to see nothing but whiteness for a few seconds.

That moment is fast approaching our parting couple here, saying nothing at all is a more tender and poignant farewell than trying to compete with the crescendo of the train.
