ANGUS SAYS:
Everyone has come across an Asbo Alan at some point in their lives- that seagull that tries to steal a chip or who saunters up to you nonchalantly minding his own business before suddenly making a ram-raid style grab for your seaside sandwich crumbs or dive bombs out of nowhere to take the whole thing right out of your hand.
Asbo Alan's are almost always Herring Gulls which are the most abundant gull species in the UK. They are loud, brash and daring scavengers and are serial food thieves. One of the reasons for their repeated kleptomania is familiarity. They can live between 30 and 50 years and often spend more than 20 years in the same nesting site, so they know the best place to smash and grab!
I have imagined my Herring Gull as having been previously brought to justice with an asbo electronic tag to show for it, worn with menacing pride, a balaclava to hide his identity as he makes off with his ironic loot.
This piece was released by Angus in 2023 as an independent artist, prior to him being signed up by Wishbone Publishing.
