TIM SAYS:

This piece originally began as an idea based on a different railway station, and it was only when I discovered that 2023 is the centenary of the Flying Scotsman that I decided to move the location to York.

This now-celebrated locomotive used to run between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, and York was one of only a handful of stations on the line at which it stopped. The steps, pillar, bridge, wooden cabin and clock, though facelifted, are all still there, and the staff at the National Railway Museum were extremely helpful with my research into how it would have looked in the mid-twentieth century.

I photographed the engine on its centenary tour of heritage railways in March 2023, then set about imagining the stories it could tell....

Ae Fond Kiss by Robert Burns

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, and then forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears   I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
Naething could resist my Nancy;
But to see her was to love her;
Love but her, and love forever.
Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met—or never parted—
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!
Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, alas, forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears   I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!
