"A vision without a strategy remains an illusion, we are all being played"

Surreal, intriguing and full of hidden narrative, The Queen’s Gambit by Michelle Mackie takes us into a world where nothing is quite as it first appears.

A red-haired woman in a rich teal dress walks barefoot along a pathway transformed into a giant chessboard, carrying an oversized white chess piece in her arms. Behind her, another piece lies fallen, while a solitary black cat follows at her side. Every element feels deliberately placed, yet the story remains tantalisingly unexplained.

The chess imagery brings ideas of strategy, choices and the moves we make through life, while the lone figure seems to be quietly making her own way through the game. Is she protecting her piece, removing it from play, or preparing her next move? Michelle leaves that for us to decide.

The muted, misty landscape makes the jewel-like colour of her dress and vivid red hair stand out beautifully, creating the dreamlike, slightly otherworldly atmosphere so characteristic of Michelle’s work.

The Queen’s Gambit is a wonderfully imaginative piece of contemporary art — mysterious, thought-provoking and just a little bit peculiar in all the right ways.
