Beautiful View, the fantastic sculpture by International Artist Mackenzie Thorpe, shows how one man’s struggle from humble beginnings culminates with an amazing accomplishment.
The Shepherd stands at the top of the tower he has created, contentedly surveying the land in front of him. Starting off with small stones that allude to initial struggles, your eye wanders up and is drawn to the figure at the summit. This man has overcome many hardships in his life, and can be proud of the journey that has brought him to his tremendous victory.
Captain James Cook, also a Middlesbrough man like Mackenzie Thorpe, once said “do just once what others say you can’t do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again”. This quote is still relevant today, and we must all strive to never give up in the face of adversity.
