I’ve created a few pieces to date on ‘Back To The Future’ and barely touched the surface but it always comes down to the car, THE car! As ‘Lost in Hollywood 2’ is the sequel to the first collection back in 2016 I wanted to link the first piece ‘OUTATIME’ to this new one and I have done that from the tunnel that featured in the background that really drew people in and captured their imagination. In the first piece you see the arse-end of the Delorean being worked on in Doc’s gritty workshop, in readiness for another journey through time, that time is now and it’s time to get ‘OUTAHERE’!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe difference with this piece is that it isn’t a scene that is driven by the detail in the foreground but instead focuses on the car in full view and full motion - just as it about to hit that critical 88MPH. With the lightning kicking off in the distance over the city there is something quite special about the car leaving everything behind. The composition is set so that you could quite easily simply be a bystander on the footpath just lucky enough to capture this dramatic sight. A few seconds later you’re stood there with just a spinning number plate and fire trails wondering if you really saw that.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhilst creating this piece an earlier study involved focusing much more on the car and where the background became a subtle backdrop. I chose to rework it so it fitted better with the collection as a whole but what this meant is that the level of detail in and around the Delorean is insane as that was the challenge that I set myself. Even though the car is now reduced down in composition you can still clearly see the detail and that sense of drama and movement - something different for me as the cars tend to be static. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis was a technically challenging piece to put it politely, piecing together the tunnel with a new opening and cliff that framed it whilst also softening the scene. I always seek to inject a dramatic light source where possible and the detailing within the tunnel was the perfect platform for this. Without a doubt, the end result had to be dramatic, content-rich and destructive, this image has everything and some!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose to focus on a scene of utter devastation in front of the iconic Grand Central Terminal in New York City with a collapsing bridge adding drama as well as composition. This is shown in almost silhouette form as contrast to the warmth of the explosion behind it, the perfect opportunity to add the dramatic light source that features in so much of my work regardless of subject. Colours are massive for me, I obsess over them! To get the overriding palette from the Avengers to feature in such a striking yet beautiful way is particularly pleasing, as is the contrast between darkness and light, it was easily one of those pieces that just gets bigger and bigger with each hour that passes.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe biggest difference in this image compared to what I am known for to date is the inclusion of key characters, I have featured subtle silhouettes to date but this was very different for me and the result is even more dramatic, it really does amplify the sense of movement and each super hero bring their own quality to the scene. I wanted to do something as equally dark, it is really intense! What you see focuses on the relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker and how incredibly toxic it is. It conveys how completely intoxicated and infatuated she is and under his spell and unable to see the wrongs from their relationship and being unable to truly break away from it. It focuses on how someone can have such a hold over you where you will literally sacrifice everything and do anything for them, whether that is quality of life, state of mind or \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003eself-worth\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003eIt runs true to the narrative of the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003efilm,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003e but it really builds on this sense of toxicity within a relationship that feature in past pieces such as ‘The Wolf Within’, very dark and real. As with ‘Smile’, there are two main characters to enjoy. Harley is breaking away, she screams fight, inner \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003estrength,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003e and power! Yet the impact of the Joker’ stood central is massive, sinister and controlling. The piece would have been a cracker without him there as Harley is literally strong enough on her \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003eown,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s3\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bumpedFont20\"\u003e but he just reinforces the fact that he still lives on in her mind. Her memories of their relationship exist within the factory buildings, the moment when they first met when she was his Psychiatrist is beautiful and contrasting. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love how you then see them move in for a kiss. In contrast there’s the powerful moment when the Joker jumps in to pull her out from the acid bath after she almost paid the ultimate sacrifice for his love. These semi-translucent memories that we see and that she sees represent just how no matter how toxic and destructive a relationship can be, these innocent memories that flood your mind won’t fade as quickly as a bruised arm or heart but that ultimately will hold you back. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUltimately it is a positive image, she is basically saying ‘fuck this, you have no power over me, you don’t own me’. You know what I’m like, I always try to get a car into a scene where possible! I love it! The other characters are depicted in various ways amongst the scene. A truly incredible piece of filmmaking and storytelling! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWatching how a person can change into something so destructive whilst being so detached from their actions as a result of being driven and pushed by the devil or devils on their shoulders was harrowing. Truly harrowing. Later that Summer saw the first ‘Lunatics and Legends’ collection which featured ‘Harley Quinn, this was hinted at if you look closely within ’Smile’. The plan for 2021 was to simply reverse this, so ‘Lost In Hollywood 4’ saw ’Toxicity’ released that showcased Harley in ’Suicide Squad’, which then set me up to finally create the Joker in this format.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArt with meaning, art with reason. My works have always been driven by aspects of mental health, be it from my own experiences and emotions at the time or embodying those of a person who was struggling with their demons. Everyone struggles in so many ways, some live with their demons from day one and have never seen the sun, others are dragged down by opening the door to the devil and who’s whitest of walls become blackened by phantoms that cast their shadows so strongly behind them. Ultimately it is the voices that you hear that can define the outcome, do the words that heal come from another or from within? At the same time, words that burn - who, or what fans the flames? The devil and I.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy hope for this piece is that it will resonate with many, for so many reasons as the devil comes in so many forms. Strip away the make-up and the masks that we wear and acknowledge why your shoulders can feel so fucking heavy and your air around you can feel like a cage. Acknowledge how things can quickly turn black if allowed to. Turn your head away from the darkness, even if in stages at first and if all you feel that you see to your left or right is black then look upwards. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece can simply be enjoyed as a celebration of three brilliant iterations of one ‘villain' and that is fine, after all that is how so many films are enjoyed. Or you could look a little closer, a little deeper into the mirror. Who do you see? Do you see someone close to defeat or someone who is a split second away from rising upwards. No chance! My love for the ‘Back to the Future’ films is as strong as ever. Travelling back to 2016 is when ‘OUTATIME’ was created as part of my debut ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collection. A sold-out edition, it seemed to really capture the imagination of my collectors as so much was going on but just out of sight. As a mixture of commissioned pieces and limited editions, I have created a cracking set of artworks that showcased the iconic ‘DeLorean’ time machine and the brilliant details from the movies. ‘OUTALUCK’, ‘OUTASTEAM’, ‘OUTAAIR’, ‘OUTAHERE’ and a unique ’88 and OUT’ have all pulled on the heart strings and have been so well received. It’s a fine balance, as you don’t want to over produce, tricky when your head is so full of new interpretations, but there was always one missing.  I have always been asked if I was going to take on ‘Back to the Future 2’ and now, after 3 years I am so pleased to unveil ‘OUTAREACH’!  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second movie really stood out as a kid in the 80s and that fire was kept burning throughout adulthood with the fascination of comparing what the film predicted 2015 would look like with how it actually transpired. So, the scene that you now see playing out here is one that I have kept locked away for years, it’s quite something to see it come to life now. A theme that has followed on with each release of ‘Lost in Hollywood’ has been certain pieces becoming more ‘in your face’ with the introduction of key characters. Generally, the details and hidden references in my works mean that adding these characters isn’t a necessity but some pieces that have a particular meaning really benefits from them and ‘OUTAREACH’ is a shining example of this.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a sense of defiance, of strength, a partnership at the top of their game, changing the course of time in the ultimate car. Marty and Doc transform this piece! McFly’s pose, sat on the bonnet in that iconic outfit as Doc keeps everything out of reach as he hovers just above the lake, it just portrays such a sense of being untouchable. That expression on Docs’ face! So good! This concept of being above everything is amplified by the number of chickens that encircle them, certainly one of the most random moments in the studio for sure! Welcome inside my head! First glance and it’s just pure good fun but there’s a sense of strength to fight off the insult of being called chicken, a random line that seemed to create such a strong reaction. Now, despite being surrounded and with chickens coming at him from all angles, it’s cool, no flux given. Rise above it!  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am so proud of this piece; everything has come together perfectly. The colours especially scream 80s, the jade green against the pinks and orange transform the impact of the art. Having wanted to show the ‘DeLorean’ in flight for years, seeing it ready for take-off is so pleasing, for me it is the subtle, technical details that most won’t spot that are so rewarding. Yet, despite the impact and positioning of the time machine and the Doc and Marty, it is the ‘Mall’ that I am as equally proud of. The work that went into that was insane! Having seen how it looked in the first movie, to see it clad with glass was superb, so I have gone big with this detail. In the movie, the brick fascia looked a bit bare in comparison, so what I have done is to create a series of adverts that promote products that can be found inside the mall as well as local businesses and, ‘Jaws 19’! If you have been with me since the start, then you will get it. As well as featuring adverts from details that were seen in the film, I have also positioned adverts of actual products that came out in 2015 that still relate to the movie. I will leave those for you to decipher. The ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy was and always will be adored and so much fun, I had so much of a laugh creating ‘OUTAREACH’, there is no better example of how your imagination runs away from you when you’re consumed in the emotion of the movie than the chicken that is racing away from the shark. It took an age to create so it looked believable despite being so random! A much more blatant, ‘in your face’ abstract style of mixed media work that was all about the texture and embraced my blurred ‘push and pull’ method of creating a digital image. I had used the style long before this for much more niche subjects, so it was great to go to town on big superheroes and twisted villains. Despite these pieces not relying on a multi-layered narrative to solve what you see, there is still that element to them where the lines between who is the hero and who is the villain are as blurred as parts of the image itself.    \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA lot has happened in the past couple of years, and I am so pleased to see the success of this style of work whilst I have been busy conceiving and delivering exciting and engaging new formats to showcase my art. One of those has been the incredibly popular and versatile VHS edition, largely due to the compact size and the level of hand embellishing that all come together to create something truly special. The Story Book editions evolved from this earlier this year and through being sized and framed the same, can be displayed side by side with the VHS editions.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, for something new and another pun, I’ve been keeping my cards close to my chest recently, teasing you lot on what I had ready to reveal. Well, it’s time to show my hand, I am proud to introduce the playing card editions! Featuring four float-mounted cards that each display either a hero or villain, who is which depends on you.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach card is hand finished to appear aged and scuffed, with the occasional splatter of blood (not actual blood!) thrown over them. The backboard is heavily embellished with paints, with each one being different. The frame features a charred gold inlay that is starting to crumble away to reinforce the darkness that runs through the characters, reminiscent of the battles that they fight or force.
